Emmerich.R pointed that the sound actually is the half of the film experiences. As I read several interviews, many director mentioned that when they started to read the script, they already began to image the sound field or feeling for different scene and write it down beside it. This gives me a new big concept, I also should to think about more the sound part when we talk about the screen.
Film is formed by sound and picture naturally, even in the mute film period, there is a music band to match the performance. In the beginning of the film industry development, the way to shoot film is quite different from nowadays. Due to the limitation of the technology, the directors have to use more scene to describe the information which lost by the sound part, even that could not be good enough to present the idea of the story itself. And by using this way, the rhythm of the film is totally broken.
With the development of the new technology, the soundtrack has improved from mute to mono, from mono to stereo, from stereo to surround. By experienced the good standard of equipment, we could even touch the sound impact, the soundtrack now make us feel in the film. Though our brain spend more energy for understand the information from the pictures, when we heard from the sound, it affects us a lot, we will naturally process and render the sound information to supply the pictures.
Every year, there are thousands films are published, how to become innovative among them? Jing Tao got his attitude, he said that the similar way to process the sound effects like the Hollywood action or war film is no longer could make our audience shock. He tried to pay more attention on the part which normally will be ignored. In the new Chinese film the flowers of war (2011), he used more fog effects and some shout from the women to establish the atmosphere of this war film instead of too much boom weapon sounds. The film itself now in China mainland got a good feedback and remarkable tickets achievement.
